Everybody .
I got another tutorial for you today .
Um For this one , I'm going to be teaching you how to draw the profile .
This is going to be so that you can translate your style into drawing a profile .
So it doesn't matter what your style is , you should be able to draw a profile after watching this video , if you follow these tips , all you need is something to draw with a pencil or a pen .
If you're new to drawing profiles , I suggest using something you can era and then uh the other thing you need will be a , a ruler .
This is from grade school .
So it's seen a lot of things , but you just need that so you can draw some straight lines and figure out where all the face body parts go .
All right , let's start it .
So on a blank piece of paper , just draw your face as you normally would .
So this will be where you get your style from .
So drop face without any references and that's your style .
OK ?
That's how I define it at least .
So we're just going to start drawing a base here .
So I always start with a circle come down and make sure that this is a nice um straight on face and a good way to get a straight on face from the get go is to take your ruler and you draw from the gin to the center of the circle straight down .
Now you have like a marker that's a little to the right , but we'll just use it as the center .
That way you've got a little bit of an idea of where everything goes .
OK ?
So take that and just draw your face and of course , these are just guidelines .
So you could still chisel and knock pieces out and or add pieces and that's OK .
Oh Good day , man .
And the reason you're drawing it straight on is just so we can draw straight lines to figure out where all the pieces will go on the profile .
Otherwise it's um like if you had like a slant face , like one eye would be here .
One eye is like up here and that would just be kind of confusing .
So this is just gonna help us figure out where everything goes .
So her cheeks , I like to just draw circles to mark where the cheeks are because I don't know , in case I forget you never know it could happen .
Now , this part isn't necessary , but I think I'm gonna just add some here .
Not that there's anything wrong with being bold .
So when you're done , you should have something that looks sort of like this , but in your own style , of course .
So we have our straight on face and it's time to start working on the profile .
So what I will do is notice how I started with the circle first .
We're gonna draw that same circle over here .
OK .
So now we have our circles and what we're going to do first is draw a straight line at the bottom of her chin .
Hopefully , that's straight here .
We have bottom merchant straight across .
I should probably tape down this paper because it's going everywhere .
All right .
Now , using this line , we're going to draw straight from this edge of the circle down .
No , it's not perfectly straight because I like it to be a little curved , a little bit more organic because people aren't robots .
If you're drawing a robot , you could probably use a nice straight line .
It wouldn't matter .
But , you know , people are all different and fleshy and they not square .
OK .
So we're just gonna draw a nice little curve to go straight down to there .
Now , now we have a nice shape .
Now , I've noticed whenever I draw a circle , I always draw the head really big in comparison .
So I have to overcompensate .
So this is not the back of her head even though it was both , both sides of her head here , like it was the same size as her head here .
But here it doesn't really work because our heads are longer than they are wide .
So we have to go a little bit further .
It's usually a bit of for me because I don't know , I don't know , I just do it wrong all the time .
So I have to just add that in myself .
Usually how I figure out where that is is I will draw line from the ear straight .
So we're gonna go from the bottom of the ear straight and then from the top of the ear , I'm gonna do another nice straight line .
OK ?
So now we know that's the size of the ear right there .
And that's how high it should be in comparison to this character because we drew her already and we know that's what she looks like .
So we can figure out what she looks like from the side .
So we know the ears here .
I , I mean , we do have to figure out where it goes here , but I've noticed ears are about actually , they're a little bit farther away from the front of the face than the back of the face .
So using that , I can figure out where the back of the head should be .
So it's like one third , two thirds is how I kind of do it .
Then if you'll have hair that will sometimes come out farther .
But for the head , if you're drawing a bald guy , it would go about there .
So now we know that the ear is here , Bob Chin's here and head goes out about that far because two third , one third , then we're going to take our ruler again , draw the bottom of her chin .
So where her chin starts going straight up again , we're going to draw a straight line from there right here and go straight there we go .
So now we have an extra line .
I like to label these lines just so I don't get mixed up .
So that's like top of ear , bottom of ear , this is top chin and also mouth to the bottom of the chin .
So now that we have this chin mark , this chin mark and the ear , we can draw the chin .
So this part is gonna go curved up until about that point and that's when it starts going straight up towards the ear and now the ear comes out of that .
So we get to move the ear over a little because that's the way her face looks .
So now we have the basic shape of her head and to figure out where the neck is , the neck along with is pretty much centered on the ear .
So if we just draw a little bit of a guideline there , that's the center of the neck , it actually comes off a little like that .
And this part really doesn't come out much at the neck , that's about it like not much pops out that way .
I mean , of course , it's different for everyone , but in general , it doesn't really come out much .
It kind of just starts sloping up a little bit and this actually comes off there straight off the chin or from the point of the chin , it goes about straight .
So then there we have her neck for that side .
Ok .
We can probably just draw in her ear again in your own style .
Don't , you don't have to copy mine and ears are a bit slanted like pets , get that to work .
So you can actually draw straight lines from the bottom of the nose up .
But we won't be doing that because , well , I didn't feel that there .
We have her ear .
We're done , right ?
No .
Ok .
Um , let's go with the nose next because that part is kind of fun .
Let me take the bottom of the nose and draw a nice straight line .
We also need the top of the nose .
I like to draw this circle in the nose when she's looking forward just so I know where the top of the nose is .
It's actually lining up with the bottom of her ear .
So I don't actually need to draw that line so I can just do a nose there too .
So we know nose goes in that spot , the nose goes now that we have that line , we can figure out where her nose goes , said it again .
So you , when I draw cartoon faces , I don't usually have this very straight line if you're drawing a more realistic face , then this line will be more straight , like even with the parts sticking out .
Um I , since I like to draw a little bit more cartoony , I like to emphasize different features .
So I like to pull it in about there .
So then we have to meet where that line was .
That's the top of her nose .
So we might actually want to go a little higher .
So we know the nose will be right there .
So there's her nose and when her mouth , we've said it lines up with the same line as the chin .
So we can go straight down from that draw a little bit of a mouse .
So actually this chin mark will more like , you know , once you have the nose and how long you want the nose to be , you're actually gonna redraw this chin line down like that .
Now you're not going to follow that .
Exactly .
But when I draw cartoons , I like the mouth to stick out a little bit more than the top of her forehead .
Now you'll want to look up different ethnicities depending on what character you're drawing and how far that sticks out because for different ethnicities , um The no , I guess that's like the nozzle .
I don't know , but that'll stick out on different people and like some , some ethnicities have flatter faces , some have like big fore heads .
It's something to look into when designing your character .
But , or for the means of this video , we're just going to draw probably a Caucasian .
Next , we're going to finish up the chin .
So after the lips , usually it'll go dip a little bit more and then go back up to the chin .
Now , if you're drawing a girl that has like chubby cheeks , then her chin is probably gonna be a little bit more rounder .
Now , if , if she's got a little bit more of a leaner face , then you're gonna want a little bit more of a pointy chin and this line will probably be a little bit more um crisp and not so organic .
So we're just going to chisel away these lips because they look not quite right , not really what I'm going for .
Maybe we'll just cut into and when learning profiles , it's all about , you know , attempting different things and trying out different things I think from here is that I actually put her mouth out a little too far .
So I'm going to just reset and try it again .
There you go .
I like that better already .
Ok .
So she's got more chin than up between her , her top of her lip .
And so since we drew this line , it's actually showing up , so that's good .
Makes it look like the same person , which is always fantastic .
I'm just gonna shade the top of her lip here .
I should probably do it over here as well .
Get her more of a smile because her , her mouth is almost ending up at the top of her nose .
So we'll just add that line right there .
Go .
Now , we have some decent thing here .
I like this as a personal preference and if it was a different character or depending on characters and their different way they look , I like to give a little bit of a bump right there .
I think it just makes it look cute .
The top of that circle that I used for the guideline of the nose .
I think it just makes it look a little bit more feminine like guys , I would probably draw a straighter line .
It's kind of just a generalization .
It's not like I don't think that's quite true .
My nose is a little bit straighter but I think it just looks cute and feminine .
So go with that since we're drawing a girl next .
It's probably about time do her eyes because she looks like a faceless character at the end of the Agents of Shield midseason finale .
So we're going to there we go to draw two lines from the top of her eye and the bottom of her line , eyes straight that way .
And as you see , these are not quite straight because it's skinnier there than it is right there .
So we're gonna try that again and try to line it up with that one .
So her eyes won't be pretty .
It's gonna be confusing .
So her eye is basically in the same spot as the top of her ear .
So we're going to go with that .
Now , in a more realistic drawing , their eyes are way smaller , so they'd probably line up with the top of the ear .
But again , it's cartoons .
So everything is a little bit more exaggerated , especially the eyes because everybody lives big eyes in their um cartoons .
So it's good that , so we have our oval shape .
There's her eyeball .
I've noticed , I'm not sure if this is true .
Eyes usually start at the bottom of the mouth .
But since she's smiling a little , we can give it a little bit of leeway .
So I should probably be right there .
Now , a mistake .
I see a lot in people's drawings when they're drawing profiles that makes their drawing not look quite right is that they draw this same exact eyeball here .
So it would be like I like that and that just doesn't look right .
And here's the reason why um if you look at someone's profile their eyes , it's , it's a circular circular shape here .
But from here , it's more of like a , is that like a sideways v greater than less than sign ?
Because uh your eyelids coming over it and your other , your bottom eyelids coming over it .
So it makes more of a V shape .
And once I figured that out , I don't know how old I was at the time , too old , but once I figured that out , I all my profiles started looking way better .
So try that one out if you haven't tried it yet .
So you're still going to use the circle for the guideline because that's the eyeball .
Your eyeball is a circle it's in there .
So that will help you figure it out .
So you can use this end of the eye bulb because that's what it looks like .
And you've got your nice eye , of course , you want to translate that into your own style .
So I'm a little bit more simplistic eye here with a nice big fat eyelash .
And since her eye is more of at an angle , we're gonna need to give this an angle .
So this point right here , so we're gonna take that basic shape , but we're gonna modify it to our own character .
So it needs to be more slanted and we can actually draw another line here to figure out where that goes .
So this bottom line is gonna go straight up to there and then this angle is gonna be not quite as steep up at the top .
So you can see that's already starting to look a little bit more like the character on that side .
And now we're gonna take my big fancy eyelash which goes way up here and add that in .
You don't have to do that if you don't draw eyelashes like that , that's that another thing to make it look a little bit more like a girl is just to give it a heavier line up on the top , it gives the uh illusion of eyeliner .
So I know when I drop profiles , they'll , they'll look very masculine at times so that I found will helps a bit .
I'm just gonna go straight in that way .
Quite like here we go .
So now we've got the two different , this one's a lot darker because I wasn't quite as comfortable .
So I'm pressing harder .
But yeah , once you get a little bit more used to it , it will all fall into place .
And I've also got a little bit of eyelashes .
So I'm gonna draw those in .
Excuse me .
Now , for the pupil , it's not gonna be a circle again .
It's more of take your circle and then tune it this oh excuse me this way , see it , this shape right here .
It's not quite a circle anymore .
It's more of like an oval .
So we're gonna take an oval , but it's chopped on the sides .
Although she's looking up a little .
So we better take that into account .
She's actually up to the side a little that and then I'll add my little flare style to it .
It was actually if the lighting source is the same , that's gonna be oval too .
So there you go .
She looks a little , she looks happier there than she does there .
But yeah , and you'll see , even if you were to look in the mirror and like get two mirrors so you could see your own profile .
You'll notice you look way different forward than you do sideways .
Trust me , I've noticed on myself .
I'm like , whoa , is that even me ?
Yep .
That's me .
It's just the side of my face .
Ok .
So we've got her eyes , her nose , her mouth , her chin and her ear .
So we've got all that .
We should probably start working on her eyebrow .
So everybody's , I think basically everybody , um , your forehead has this little out dent .
So everybody's forehead goes in a little here .
I mean , a lot less than in this cartoon drawing .
But there's always this one point right before it starts going in for your eyeballs , you can actually feel that yourself , just feel your eyebrow .
You'll notice it's right before it starts going in for your , your eye socket .
So it's like right here .
So that's the , oh your eyebrow will line up with that point that right before it starts going down .
So we're gonna draw our eyebrow in .
I should probably draw a line actually because I'm not sure where that's going , the bottom of the eyebrow and the top of the eyebrow .
So that's the space we have .
See , I was way off .
That's why I draw these lines .
Ok ?
We're just gonna sketch that in .
Well , she's not supposed to be so angry .
So I'm gonna try and lighten that up a bit .
Now , another mistake I see is people take that eyebrow all the way to um the end of their forehead .
And unless your character has a unibrow .
You really don't want to do that because it will give the illusion of an eye a unibrow .
It's a little thicker than that one is gonna shave a little off the top , shave it off .
It's a little better .
It just kind of angry .
Do you fix that ?
I don't want her to be angry .
Let's just be happy .
Think a way to fix that .
I just curve that down and pop that in .
So there we've got her profile and I'm actually going to cut this in a little , get a little wider neck .
There we go .
So we've still got the ear in the center .
Her head comes around this way .
We've got your profile .
Yeah , this is a lot simpler but just to give you a little example , I'll leave there anyway .
I'm just gonna give her a little bit of hair even though I don't really have any room .
OK ?
I'm gonna be lucky .
I get a little bit of a just to show you that um when you're drawing hair , it needs to , if it's got volume and it's not like flat and greasy , you're gonna want the hair to just get to come out further than your scalp .
Here .
You can see it comes out and that makes her look so much more even already .
And then when it comes to like hairlines , that's gonna be another thing .
You're gonna want to look at the ethnicity of your character .
Some people have flat hairline , some people have a little triangle at the bottom .
Some people have one that comes like down like that .
So that's something you were gonna want to research when designing your character just make him a little bit more believable .
We go some hair and then here when it comes down the um the neck here hair comes down a little bit past your ear .
If you feel it , it's almost lined up with your ear , but she's a cartoon .
So I'm going to exaggerate that and come down just a little bit more .
There we go .
And you can make that line a little bit jaggeder because unless she's cutting it to make it completely flat , it's not going to be flat .
Some guys or when you go to like a barbershop , they'll shave that .
So they have a perfectly straight line , but she doesn't do that and then she's got her ponytail and it's coming down and I actually drew it over here , coming over her shoulder .
You can see that .
So I should probably add that .
That's good , good enough for the means of this video .
So there we go .
I showed you how to take your own picture that you drew straight on and convert it into a profile .
People only say profile picture , but then it reminds me of Facebook and we're not drawing Facebook profile pictures .
I mean , you could use it but whatever .
Um So we've got as long as you're drawing it the same way you did over here , just sideways , it should convert pretty well .
And if something's not quite working out , I suggest using um some actual photo references .
So just look up profiles of different people and find one that you like for your character .
So that you know , whether to add like little bumps or if you want like a straight nose or if you want or nose to actually dip more like that , have a nose like that .
I mean , the , the possibilities are limitless , especially when you start with a blank piece of paper .
So there you go .
I hope you enjoyed watching me draw this profile here .
Thank you guys for watching .
I hope it helped out .
Some people I noticed in my last sketchbook video , people also said that they struggled drawing profiles .
So I hope this helps you maybe just a little bit .
And uh thank you guys for watching and I'll see you guys all next week .
