Homemade French Bread Recipe - How Easy Can It Be To Make Your Own Bread

video content Image generated by Wilowrid

My name is Glenn and I'm just an average guy cooking things that if I can cook them , you can too .

And today I made for my family some white chicken chili .

And so I've always liked to have some kind of bread with my soup or chili .

And so I came up with the idea today to make homemade French bread .

So that is our recipe for today .

If you'd like to see the recipe or tutorial for that white chicken chili , I'll leave it down in the description below as well as the card will pop up here .

But let's go ahead and dive into today's recipe .

So for our ingredients , we're gonna need one packet of active dry yeast , two tablespoons of sugar , two tablespoons of olive oil as well as 1.5 teaspoons of salt .

You're also gonna need 3.5 cups of all purpose flour and one cup of water that's been heated to about 100 and 15 degrees .

You're also gonna need one egg white that's been blended with one tablespoon of cold water .

So we're gonna start with a large mixing bowl and we're just gonna pour our water in there , pour our yeast in there and then get that yeast nice and dissolved .

And once our yeast is dissolved , then we wanna add our sugar , salt and olive oil and give them a good mix .

Now , we want to start adding our flour and begin to , to form our dough and you can do this with a mixer , but I chose to do it this way for one .

So you guys can see how it's done .

But for two also to show people that you don't necessarily need a mixer to make bread at home .

Now , we just want to prepare our working surface with a little bit of flour .

And we're gonna start to need our , our dough for about 6 to 8 minutes trying to get as much of that remaining flour into the dough as possible .

Then we want to form it into a , a ball and we're gonna place it into a greased bowl , flipping it once to coat the top and then just letting it sit in a warm place covered for about an hour until doubled .

Then we wanna punch the dough down , cover it again and let it sit for about another half an hour until doubled again .

Once that's done .

If you cleaned off your working surface like I did , then we wanna go ahead and get that ready again .

We're gonna take out our dough and we're gonna start to form our loaf .

So we're just gonna kind of roll it up .

Uh , we should have a loaf in the end result .

Roughly about 15 , 16 inches , maybe about 2 , 2.5 inches in diameter .

We wanna kind of taper the ends a little bit and once we have our loaf formed , then we're just gonna go ahead and set that off to the side and on a baking sheet that's been greased , we're gonna take a little bit of cornmeal and this is optional .

It's not necessary , but it's just a taste that I like .

We're gonna take a little bit of cornmeal and just spread it across the , the area where we're gonna place our loaf of bread .

And once we've got that done , we're gonna take our loaf , sit it on the pan and put it back in a warm dry place again , uh for about a 2030 minutes until double and once we've got it doubled , we're gonna take our egg white and water mixture and we're just gonna base the top of our loaf .

Then you wanna slice the top of the bread about every inch to an inch and a half .

This helps to keep the , the bread from breaking apart during baking .

Now , we want to place it in the oven that's been preheated to 375 degrees and we're gonna bake it for 25 minutes about halfway through .

We wanna baste it again with our egg white and water mixture just to help brown that crust a bit .

Once baked , we want to take it out of the oven , sit it on a wire rack and let cool for about 20 to 30 minutes .

Then it's time for my favorite part .

Slicing it up for a taste test .
