BMW M2 Competition DCT - Explained. Don't buy one before you watch this!

We're moving backwards even though we're in first gear .

Now , I have to be honest and say that before I made the decision to buy a BMW MT competition with a DCT transmission , I was really worried that it would make the car too easy to live with and not as much fun to drive , but after two months and more than 10,000 kilometers driven in it , I'm happy to report that the DCT empty competition is just as special as the manual M two , but in a different way .

So in today's video , I'm going to talk to you about BMW S DC T double class transmission and I'm going to tell you some of his best quirks and features .

Now first , let me show you the gear lever and how it works because this one works quite differently .

So let's start up the car first .

As you can see , the car is now in park mode .

If you want to put it in neutral , you just have to push it to the left .

And as you can see this has a spring mechanism and it just jumps back in the middle and if you want to put it into drive , you just move it to the right .

And now as you can see the car is in drive , so we're back in neutral now .

And if you want to change gears by yourself from the gear lever , you just press it forward to go down a gear and drag it towards you to go up a gear , right ?

Easy peasy .

And if you want to go into reverse , you have to go to the left , hold it here and then push it to the front .

Now that you know more about this gear lever , let me tell you the first quirk of this transmission , right ?

So now we are in drive as you can see here , hopefully .

Yeah .

And if you've driven automatic cars , you probably think that if I release the brake , the car is just gonna crawl , right ?

Meaning it's gonna move forward by itself .

But this doesn't really happen in the M two competition .

So I'm just releasing the brake .

I'm not holding any pedals .

And as you can see the car is standing still right .

You can see it's not moving .

But as you can see here , the car is still in drive .

So in order to drive off , you need to tap the accelerator and only then does the gearbox engage , right ?

But the problem with the no crawling feature that this DC T transmission has is the fact that if you end up on a hill , the car is in drive and you let go of the brake , it only holds the car there for about one or two seconds and then you start rolling back down the hill .

Let me show you that .

So again , first gear , as you can see , I'm letting go of the break now and we're moving backwards , even though we're in first year .

Don't worry about that .

I'm not on a public road , I'm on a dirt road right now .

So be very careful when you're driving this car in a city that has lots of ramps like this one because uh the car is going to roll back even though you're in gear .

And no , you can't really count on the auto hold function because DC T transmissions don't come with that function .

So there you go .

Now , the next quirk of the DC T box in this empty competition that you need to know about before deciding to buy one is the fact that it's not great at low speeds .

It's not as smooth as the Z F transmission , which the M five and the next M three and M four have .

And it takes a while to respond to your inputs .

When you're driving slowly around town , even when you set everything to sport or sport , plus when you're driving slowly , the gearbox is just slow to react .

Another good example of this behavior is when you're trying to maneuver the car in a parking lot , for example , and when you switch from going backwards to forwards or the other way around .

You need to count two in your head before you press the accelerator because otherwise nothing is really going to happen .

Now , the last feature I want to tell about this car and probably my favorite is the fact that it's highly configurable .

It doesn't really have a sport mode per se .

But this button over here behind the gear lever makes all the difference in the world .

So this button over here gives the transmission three modes in which to operate , right ?

They don't have any names .

They're just three steps basically .

So in the first one , this transmission basically acts like any other automatic transmission on the market and it's going to drive you insane by trying to keep the rev of the engine as low as possible .

Having said that I have to admit that this mode is quite useful when you're just cruising around outside of the city , when you don't really need high RPMs in order to drive around , right ?

And this really helps with the fuel economy as well .

And well , it just makes for a quite relaxing drive without the engine screaming at you all the time .

This mode however , is not really useful when you're driving around town in the city .

I usually use the second mode because this just lets the engine rev until about 3000 R PM .

And it doesn't really allow the gearbox to do lots of pointless if you ask me gear changes .

And finally , we have this transmission's final setting , the third one in which it's going to behave like any other automatic in sport mode .

So basically , it's going to upshift around five or 6000 rpm and it's going to downshift really aggressively to keep the engine at that rpm .

What ?

And the other cool thing about this pattern is that and the other cool thing about this pattern is the fact that it also controls the gearbox shift ferocity .

So for example , if you have it in the third mode , right , the gear changes are going to be quite yeah dramatic .

You're going to feel every upshift and downshift , which is really cool when you're driving on a big road and you just , and you are just on it basically .

And if you want to shift gears yourself around town or outside of the city , you can just use the first or second setting in manual mode .

But that's been it for today's video .

My friends , I really hope it helps you decide between buying a manual to competition or an automatic one .

Same goes for the O G M two .

But if you ask me after owning a manual O G M two and an automatic M two , there's no real bad choice on this card .

Each of these two transmission options will offer you a quite special driving experience .
