Hi , I'm Joy Rose with the Hobby Lobby Creative Studio .
Today , we're going to talk about the basics of deco posh .
We'll cover the basic materials you'll need and we'll also provide you with some tips and tricks to get the best results .
But before we get into the how to of Deco , let's talk about what it is is the process of gluing paper fabric or other flat material onto a surface using layers of adhesive , also known as deco medium , using several layers of the adhesive as a top coat creates an inlaid effect , making the added materials appear to be part of the original piece and not just stuck on top .
Popular items to decoupage include furniture , wall hangings and small containers , but it can be done to just about any surface because of its versatility .
Jacopo is gaining popularity in the crafting world as the perfect way to customize an item and add some personality .
I mean , just look at these adorable pigs .
They get their spunk from simply deco duck cloth onto paper mache containers .
A numbered pillow gets a sparkly accent by mixing deco po medium with lots of copper glitter and painting it right onto the fabric .
And this ordinary set of drawers gets a chic new look by deco patterned paper onto the front of its drawers .
And anyone can deco poche projects can be simple enough for a beginner or can increase in complexity .
So even the skilled crafter will never get bored .
So now that you have an idea of what Deco page is , let's pick out a base .
It really can be just about anything including wood , glass , plastic , metal fabric , and even Terracotta .
If you can think it , you can probably deco it once you have something to deco punch now comes the fun part and picking out the cutouts or designs you want to add to it .
There are tons of papers to choose from like scrapbooking , paper , wrapping , paper , tissue paper clips from magazines , napkins , personal photos and more .
Here's a quick tip .
If you're going to print out images or photos to use , avoid using ink jet printers , the liquid adhesive you use to take a posh with will make the ink run because ink jet ink in most home printers is water soluble .
Instead use a laser printer which makes heat set prints that won't bleed some more out of the box items you can use include sewing patterns and pieces of fabric .
These give a super unique look and texture to projects that we just love .
The key is making sure you have the right type and the right amount of adhesive .
So let's talk about that .
Now , Hobby Lobby carries a range of deco po medium or adhesive for you to choose from .
Mod podge is a popular choice and now comes in multiple varieties .
You can also use a simple diluted white glue with 50% water and 50% glue .
You'll also want to consider the finish of the decoupage medium some dry glossy while others create a smooth matte finish .
Some even come in satin , antique crackle or glittered varieties for a really unique finish .
If you're applying things onto fabric , try fabric mod ponch .
It's both a fabric prep and adhesive in one making your Decco pod project that much easier .
Once you found the right deco medium , you'll need a few tools .
Grab a craft mat to protect your work surface , a damp cloth or paper towels to clean up excess adhesive and scissors or a craft knife to cut out your shapes and images .
Foam brushes as well as flat artist brushes are perfect for applying your adhesive .
You want to brush adhesive on to both the project's surface and the back of the piece being applied , work in small sections because deco medium dries relatively fast .
The thicker the material , the more decoupage medium you should apply to ensure a good seal .
Now be careful not to over apply though because this can cause the paper to wrinkle and rip to smooth down your pieces and get rid of bubbles .
Use a hard bristle brush Squeegee or Brayer working outward from the center of the paper or fabric .
Now , as mentioned before , the key behind Deco pa is ensuring that you get that inlaid look or the appearance that the added materials are set into the original piece and simply not stuck onto the surface , think wood floor and furniture inlays to start getting that in light effect brush , more deco pod medium on the top of your added pieces extending at least a quarter of an inch past the edges to keep it from peeling up .
We found that tearing paper instead of cutting , it works great for blending and getting a smoother edge .
Once you've finished adding all your pieces , use a brush or roller to apply several top coats of the dec page medium .
The more layers of medium , the better the inlaid effect will be let each layer dry before adding another , using an ultra fine grade sandpaper , every few coats to gently remove any rough texture or edges .
Give your project at least three layers of top coat , adding more .
If it's going to endure a lot of wear and tear , you can even get special sealants for your project like thick poon glazes or spray lack .
This is an especially good idea if your projects will be used outside .
