Hi , I'm Laurie Gelman for howdini dot com .
Here we are at a bug lover's party for both boys and girls .
And this adorable inchworm is the perfect centerpiece , Le Hansen for Betty Crocker Kitchens is gonna show us how anybody can make this cake .
Hey , how are you ?
Hi , Laurie .
Good to see you .
This looks like such a cool cake .
I'm very excited to make this one .
You wanna help ?
Yes .
Ok .
Well , all you need is a cake and I've baked it in a pan like this .
Just remember that you have to grease it and flour it or use cooking spray .
That'll make it easier for the cake to release from the pan .
I wonder how you got all those hops ?
Ok .
Yeah .
So first thing I'm gonna do is gonna cut it .
I'm gonna slice off a piece about this size .
Let me help you there .
Thank you .
So you might have seen that my board was moving as I was cutting , help you .
Well , I have a little trick .
You can actually take a damp cloth and place it underneath the board and this will prevent it from sliding around on you as you're cutting .
Oh OK .
Nice and sturdy .
So I'm gonna do the next cut now .
So that was sort of a , just a little slice off the end or a third , maybe .
Yeah , maybe about a third .
And now this one was gonna cut right in half and now we're gonna arrange it on our plate .
This is a really great plate because it is an inch worm and we're putting it on a leaf plate .
That's very creative .
I love that .
Ok .
So now we're gonna arrange it and that's gonna be like the main body and then we're gonna place these two as the head and the tail and now we're gonna start frosting the cake .
I've pre tinted some vanilla frosting and I made it a nice green and to get this color , I've used the gel color .
They have nice intense colors and you can get them at decorating stores and even some grocery stores in the baking aisle in the baking aisle .
Ok .
Ok .
So actually what I'm gonna do first is just to use a little bit of this frosting as glue .
I'm gonna put it under to make sure that the cake doesn't move while I'm frosting it .
Ok .
You're using green , but you could use any color , you could use any color for this .
Yeah .
So now we're just gonna start applying the frosting and you just wanna get a cover the entire cake .
It's easiest to get the frosting on the top the hardest part is to get into these little areas .
But this offset spatula will help you .
OK .
Right now , we're just trying to get a nice thick layer of frosting on quarter inch to even up to half an inch when we start to put the texture in , that's when we'll go back and remove some of the excess frosting .
So now I'm gonna add a little texture using my offset spatula .
It'll kind of imitate the texture of the pan that we used .
So I'm gonna go back and forth .
This will remove some of the excess frosting .
You can just scrape it off into the bowl as you go right now .
I'm just pulling up from one side and then I'll rotate it and do the other side and pull up towards the top .
Looks good time to decorate .
It is good .
Let's start with the feet .
We're gonna use gum drops .
Oh , good .
OK .
So we can use red ones and we can just place them along the bases if he is crawling around .
Ok .
Something like that .
That's great .
Do you do both sides of the cake or just ?
Yeah , if you want them , you can just have a front of the cake .
But if you wanna have it seen from both sides , definitely put the feet on both sides .
So next , we need to make a face so we can use some vanilla wafers for the eyes and I'll just put 21 here this way you can see them from both sides .
It's cute .
And then we can actually take a little dab of icing and put on little chocolate candies just to give it another little googly eye .
You can use your green frosting .
No problem .
Yeah , you can use green .
Ok .
And then the antenna , so what you can do is I have some pretzels and we can actually put little green gum drops , put , press it in there , there we go and then just stick it in there .
Cute .
Here's another one .
I guess you could use licorice too if you want .
You could see perfect and maybe just make it a little smiley face to make him happy .
So I have his little chocolate candies and just place them in an arc .
He's smiling .
So we're done .
This looks fantastic .
Can I tell you how amazing this woman is ?
Because this morning to go along with our inchworm cake she brought in these amazing bug cupcakes .
Are they hard to do ?
Not at all ?
Really ?
You just need to frost cupcakes and then get an assortment of candies .
I'm gonna make a little bumblebee .
So I'm just gonna stack chocolate and yellow candies and then do a little one for the head and then some little blue ones , little almond candies for the wings and if you want , you can even apply little eyes .
Wow .
Now you're really getting complicated , isn't it ?
Now , you're just like that .
That's fantastic .
That is easy .
You're right .
You can really get creative with these , can't you ?
Yeah , you can find all sorts of candies in different colors .
Just have fun with it .
Very cool .
Thanks , Lee .
Thank you .
And for your bug butter decorations .
Truly , let your imagination run wild .
