If you see the list on planter dot com , you should hop on that list right now .
There's another amazing deal and you can only get the code from the email .
So , have you been wondering how do I get my snake plants to be tall and big ?
How do I make them massive ?
What do I need to do ?
You've come to the right video because I'm going to talk about six things .
Six tips , six tricks .
They're not really tricks , it's just care tip that will help encourage your snake plants to get hall and erect .
But before I go any further along farther along , I'm going to say that not all snake plants get hall certain snake plants like birds nests , snake plants .
They don't , they just get wide and they don't get taller than 12 inches .
But other snake plants like the , the , the , that's just a , a species and there's many varieties within that species .
There's sensation and there's Jabo and there's others , there's quite a few others that are gonna get big indoors .
I would say they will get to be about 4 to 4.5 ft , sometimes taller .
It depends on the light that you have outdoors about a little bit bigger .
There are some varieties that are a little bit more rare that I don't know about that .
I've heard can be up to 10 ft tall .
That's scary .
That's a big snake plant .
It's a little intimidating .
But anyway , so I'm just going to talk about six things that you should know to help encourage your plants that are able to , your snake plants that are able to get tall to get tall .
I'm just gonna break it down .
I'm gonna break it down .
In order for your snake plants to get big and tall , you're gonna need to give it some time because they're not the fastest growers .
Ok ?
They probably grow a few inches a year , but you can encourage them to grow bigger foliage , taller foliage by number one .
And not an order of importance is don't divide them , don't take them out of their pots , cut them up and make them into smaller plants because that's just working against the whole basic idea here of having a bigger plant .
So if you're tempted to take your mother plant , your original plant and and propagate it , do it by taking cuttings of the leaves , putting them in a vase of some sort because it's actually very pretty or you can put the actual cuttings in soil .
This isn't a propagating video .
I'm just telling you what you can do if you want another plant from your main plant if you destroy this plant , is this gonna be smaller ?
It's never going to get big .
I've done many , many , many divisions of snake plants and I'm surprised I still have big ones left .
There are two very , very large ones I have .
I have here , I'm not doing it , not cutting it up .
When you do put them in vases like this , you can make a beautiful arrangement with them and you'll put them in water and you'll change the water every week because that needs the oxygen , right ?
It plants need the oxygen to live .
And I stuck these in water .
I don't remember .
Maybe from the last video I did and some are developing roots .
Do you see that ?
There's some roots there ?
And there's also a lot of them that don't have roots .
They take a long time to root in water , but they actually look so beautiful in the process of generating new roots .
This is this odd thing I did .
I don't know why I did it .
I think for the sake of a video , I do a lot of things for the sake of videos and , and I , I stuck some in a vase with no water and I forgot to add water .
And I'm telling you this is about like three months in the making and these leaves are actually completely perfectly fine because I tell you something about snake plants , how , how resilient they are .
And I bet I could just stick these in soil and they're gonna put out some vegeta , some roots , some , most of them will .
This one won't , this one didn't make it so pretty crazy .
Huh ?
That they literally can live outside of soil and water for a long time .
A really long time .
So it was my point .
What were they talking about ?
That is rule number one .
Resist the urge to divide your plants in order to make more plants if you want them to get tall like this guy , OK ?
Don't , don't cut them , don't cut them , don't cut them , don't divide , don't cut the roots , don't , don't slice them in half .
Give them a chance they will get bigger .
Number two is transplant them into a pot that's a little bit larger after they have become substantially rebound .
Snake plants , they really can tolerate being rebound for a long period of time .
And I have noticed that they will put out a lot of new growth when the roots are a little tight .
But at the same time , I've also noticed that the new growth isn't as tall , isn't as robust and it's really struggling to kind of push out the new growth because there's not a lot of room in , in the pot , you know what I'm saying ?
And also that what happens over time is that as the roots get bigger and thicker and take up more space in the pot , there's not a lot of soil left And so therefore , the roots aren't able to absorb nutrients , much needed nutrients that they need to be healthy .
Robust , hearty and good looking .
So I actually had transplanted this into a pot that was two inches bigger in size than the original pot it was in .
And so it still feels comfortable .
It still has room for root development and it also has room for the new foliage to escape , not coming out the bottom of the pot , not busting the pot , but coming out nice , nice and nice and tall .
This isn't a , a tall variety , but it's , it's thick , it's thick and beautiful when you are transplanting your snake plant .
This is , this is really actually important because it's a misnomer that you have to cut the roots , don't cut the roots , just gently pull the roots that are root bound away from each other .
Just give them a little encouragement to find more space in the new pot they're going into when you cut the roots of a plant .
They're , it's basically saying , let me use all of my energy and put it down here so I can repair what's going on down south because you did some damage down there .
So you , if you want the foliage to get taller to get nice and tall , you have to , you have to divert , you have to put the energy to the foliage .
You can't , you can't make it go down there .
All right .
So please avoid cutting the roots of your snake plant .
When you're transplanting it into a larger pot , you will thank me .
Your plant will get taller and be faster .
It'll go , it'll get taller faster .
Right .
That's the whole point of this video is to understand what to do and what not to do when you're trying to get big massive snake glands like this .
I did divide this though .
Number three is soil .
I know soil isn't the sexy sexiest thing to talk about .
But it's , it's a huge thing .
It's a huge matter .
If your soil of your snake plant is dense .
I may have a bunch of them everywhere if it's dense and it retains a lot of moisture .
Your plant is not gonna like it .
It's probably going to develop a root rot and it's probably gonna end up having I have one .
I think I brought an example where I did over water it and this , this ended up like falling out of the pot .
But what I , you know what I did , I just stuck it back in the pot and I stopped watering it for a while and it started to , to develop roots and it re it re rooted itself .
So the soil makes all the difference in the world .
It has to be light , it has to have organic matter in , it has to retain enough moisture that the roots have access to grab it .
Right .
If you just water , this really , really quickly and you just basically have a coat , a coating of water or moisture on the outside .
It's not enough .
You have to thoroughly water them and , and to let it drain .
So if your soil has too much clay , you shouldn't have clay in your potting soil .
So , but if , for some reason , you do get rid of it and take all the soil off of the roots of your plant and repot it with healthy light airy potting soil , any store bought potting soil is completely fine .
And if you feel like if it's holding in too much , too much moisture , add some pear , light , some pum , some coarse sand , anything you can to give it and mix it in , mix it really well .
And so when you water your plants , it drains properly .
And the other thing about the soil , I guess is that it should , um , never become compacted if it , if it becomes compacted , stick your plant , if you can , if it's small enough in a bucket of water or a jar of water or whatever you've got and let it soak for like 10 minutes or so , maybe this tiny little 15 minutes and you'll know it's soaked .
And then what will happen is that the soil will become less compacted and allow for you to water it properly next time .
Ok .
I know I'm smiling so much .
I'm smiling like a freak , but I just think it's funny that I'm just rambling on about soil .
Oh , I'm like , what's so funny about soil ?
Nothing .
This doesn't even have any soil .
Nothing is funny about the soil before I end the soil .
Ridiculous rant .
There is one thing to mention when the soil I said the word a lot is water logged when it sitting in like a pond of grossness .
What happens is that the plant is definitely more susceptible , susceptible to diseases like anthrax knots .
I can't say it right .
Anthrax nose .
I say anthrax nose because that's how it's spelled anthrax .
Anthracnose anthracnose .
I think that's how you say it .
I will definitely put it up on the screen so you can look it up .
That is a disease that's like a fungal disease that gets in and it populates and it , it's likes cool weather and it likes moist environments and then it lives in the de the detritus .
If you leave like your crappy looking leaves on the top of the soil , guess what it's gonna grow ?
Anthrax knows ?
And then when it gets warm between like 75 and 85 degrees , it's gonna spread all over the place .
And what happens is that the , do I have any anthrax ?
I hope not .
I've had it .
They just mush , they turn to mush and they just , they just fall down and it's disgusting .
It's like slime , it's like brown slime .
It ain't pretty .
So in order to prevent that from happening , let your plants dry out a lot .
Ok .
So maybe I should just talk about the watering next because that actually it does help in , in a weird way , in a way you can't see to make your plants get bigger .
These chairs are , these chairs are invisible pretty much and I almost just completely missed the chair because I didn't see it .
They're translucent .
Hm .
Let me get my other chairs back .
So let's talk about watering .
The more you water your snake plants , the more the higher the chance they have of dying .
So this is my new experiment for the last year .
I barely water them .
I only water them when I mean , I just showed you this one , right ?
It is dry as a bone .
I'm not ready to water it yet .
I'm gonna wait another , I'm gonna wait another week because it's later in the season .
It's , this really isn't actively growing right now and doesn't need it .
And I find that the more I ignore my snake plants .
Like , where is , did I bring it in here ?
Let me go , go grab it .
I'm gonna go grab it again .
I must miss the chair .
Look at this beast .
This I think is , this is a Fernwood Mikado natural and we haven't had this on the site in a long time , but I've had this for a long time .
Sorry , I just wanna get myself set because is the dangerous plant .
This is a little bit of a dangerous plant .
It has lots of sharp pointy edges and I'm , I am dangerously close to it , I think .
Ok .
So my , my point is that this plant was outside for the summer , which is another way to get your plants to grow bigger , which I'll cover later outside for the summer .
Completely ignored .
And I brought it back inside .
I shoved it into this Terracotta pot and I'm completely ignoring it and it is extremely dry .
I think .
I know I just watered it .
It was extremely dry and it just keeps getting bigger and more lovely and more wild and developing a personality .
So what's going to happen with this guy ?
I'm going to have to probably transplant it soon because I'm looking at all this new growth coming out here on the side and it looks healthy .
Maybe I just leave it in there .
Sometimes it's really hard to know when to transplant your sense of area because they look so great for so long .
And then , then I just , I , I can talk about how many videos can I make about Sanaa a lot .
Sometimes it's really difficult to know when to transplant when talking about transplanting .
What the fuck am I talking about soil ?
I know .
Oh , I'm talking about watering .
Oh my gosh .
So I , I'm watering this plant very infrequently because it doesn't need it .
It really doesn't need it .
It will probably do more damage than good if I continue to or try to over water it or over water it , I don't want to over water .
My plants step away , put the watering can down and just give it a week or two .
Here's something I can propagate and then do it again and especially , um , yes , water it again in the winter time .
Excuse me ?
Like , I don't know what was on in the winter time .
It's better to water even less than you were during the summer .
If you have a cool environment inside your house and , and not really that bright , you definitely want to come back on the watering , but that doesn't really help it get bigger .
Does it , it just prevents it from dying ?
And that in turn helps it get bigger .
Does that make any sense ?
It does ?
Yeah , it works .
Oh my God .
Why am I allowed to make videos ?
What was it ?
Oh , yeah .
Don't over water your plants and they'll get bigger .
I can't even get in here .
It's like too much stuff everywhere .
I keep massacring that monster .
Every time I walk back , light location makes a huge difference in the rate of growth of your snake plant .
Snake plants are the infamous , they're known for being able to be in any kind of light environment from low light to bright indirect light all the way to direct light outside when they're living outside and we're grown outside .
But since we're talking about indoor plants , the best environment , the best location is bright , indirect light when you know what that means .
I'm gonna tell you , I don't know why .
I think everything is so funny today .
I really , I'm sorry , maybe just in a good mood , bright , indirect light will keep their leaves vibrant , their variation , strong and pronounced and it will help the plant develop healthy foliage as it gets bigger and taller .
This is a variated whale fin snake plant and you know , I've had it , I have , I have another one .
I have another snake plant .
I have two snake plants .
These this was a double , this is a single , they , they also come in like a bush form multiple paddles and they really grow way bigger and faster .
The brighter the light they have , I don't know why I have moss on this .
I put moss on everything at one point in time .
Wow .
Look at that .
There's a new , there's a new snake plant developing .
I'll show you a little bit closer shot .
This is this one actually is getting lower light and this one is getting brighter light .
So they take a long time to grow .
So the problem , the problem is when you have one snake plant like this one leaf growing in a pot this size , it's going to take a long time for these roots to develop .
And once the roots have developed substantially enough , you'll start getting new growth like that .
Do not transplant this type of plant for a good year or two maybe even three because you'll know when you have to do it .
Should I look ?
See , that's why I don't film in my house so much because I always make it so dirty .
I , I'll tell you right now , there's not , it's not busting in the roots here .
So I'm not gonna put dirt all over the floor .
Should I do it with this one ?
I don't know .
I'm gonna pull you out and if you notice it's also partially dry , it's pretty dry and the soil looks very light and loose .
It's like it's going , it's going great so far for you .
It's going great and you have a little baby there coming up where a little baby is coming out .
I don't know .
But the better the light it gets , the more bright indirect light you get , the faster it's gonna grow and the taller it's gonna grow .
And I'm just gonna go back to something that happened in the beginning of this video when I started , you , sometimes the leaves get very , very tall and then they start flopping .
And I've had that problem with Jabo , which is the San Jabo , which is a beautiful plant .
It typically will be a little bit droopy for that particular variety or species .
But with the zyla that shouldn't happen .
And when that happens , it's because it's growing in an area that's getting , that's not getting enough sunlight and the leaves become thin and they don't get a chance to thicken up and be sturdy and hearty and dense like they should be succulent .
Right .
They're not that succulent and they just , they just fall over because there's a lot of weight in that leaf .
So if you find that happening , move it to an area that gets more light than it's getting now and keep an eye on it , you can also cut back that foliage and propagate it if you like , if it's bothering you because sometimes when the , the big , the big snake plants flap over and their floor plants , it could get you in the eye .
So be careful and also be careful watering them from above because you can get , you can get poke in the eye , maybe wear safety glasses when you're watering your sense of area .
Ok .
I'm not saying that you can't have your snake plants in low light because a lot of us have houses or rooms or wherever we live with that don't have a lot of light .
Just don't expect it to get that tall .
It's gonna take a long , long time .
Even with grow lights , grow lights , it's just not enough .
Grow lights are , are fine for some plants .
But I'm telling you it's not enough .
We need the lights .
I need a broom .
I need a broom .
One more thing about the light .
How much bright light should they be getting in order to push out a lot of new growth over six hours each day .
Ok .
Listen , I get , I get , I get it , it rains , I get it sometimes it's cloudy for months .
That sucks .
But your , your plants are just not going to get that big .
Sorry .
I'm like the bearer of bad news .
Snake plants , soil snake plants .
Let me just say these words over and over again .
Snake plants do not require a lot of fertilizer .
I do fertilize them .
What I love to do that I think helps encourage them to grow faster without over fertilizing them , which can be really bad is to add organic matter to the soil in the spring or when I'm transplanting them .
The other thing you can do too is you can use liquid fertilizer throughout the growing season .
And so it's gonna flop .
So let it naturally grow by fertilizing it the right amount .
And you can look at , you can look at many of the senses of area care guides .
There's one on planter dot com .
It'll give you some advice on when to fertilize your snake plants .
I'm just saying fertilize it in the beginning of the season .
So you don't have to worry about the rest of the season .
You're gonna go enjoy your summer with whatever you want to do with your plants or with puppies or I don't know , whatever , whatever , whatever you play with since taken off youtube like permanently .
And I was like , whoa , that , that's some bright light .
I'll sit back a little bit .
Give me another snake plant .
Give me another snake plant .
That's a , they're so cute .
Look at this little mini SLAA , they're so cute in order for this little adorable Zyona snake plant to get to be that size .
I mean , really , that's pretty big .
I'm cheating a little bit because I have them on pedestals .
But in order for this guy to catch up with those , the temperature makes a huge difference , cool temperatures just pretty much say , ok , we're done growing for a while until we feel like it's 75 degrees or 70 degrees whenever they start getting triggered .
So , if you keep your house or wherever you live , between 70 75 which is kind of high , I guess .
I keep mine at like 69 or 68 that's fine .
But in the summer they'll grow faster if you have them outdoors .
If you keep your house warm , if you keep the area where you keep your plants , maybe you keep that a little bit higher .
