Welcome back to Susie Anderson home today .
We're sharing our top tips to update and refresh your home for 2023 .
We've received such a great response from last year's edition that I wanted to offer additional tips to help you create a home you love .
The first tip is to set some time aside to create a mood board .
Whether you're wanting to update one room or your entire home mood boards serve as an excellent visual tool that will help you explore new ideas and design styles .
Select a color palette , experiment with textures and materials and choose your desired furniture , soft furnishings , and decor .
When creating your mood board , we recommend asking the following questions .
What's the purpose of the space you're designing ?
Is it a shared family space , a bedroom sanctuary or an ALF fresco entertaining space ?
What do you want the overall feel to be ideas include calming , romantic , organized , creative , restful or energizing .
What design style or colors are you drawn to a helpful resource ?
Is our interior style quiz linked below .
Lastly , how can you design a space to facilitate or enhance your current lifestyle ?
A common design practice is to start with the larger items including rugs and flooring , wall finishes , artwork , lighting , window treatments and key furniture .
Yeah , then layer in soft furnishings , textural interest , accent pieces , hardware and decorative accessories .
Using our five Ls of styling as a template .
When it comes to updating your flooring .
There's so many amazing options .
Many of which are rental friendly .
Your choice of flooring can add color , texture , passion , personality and can even help zone smaller nooks within an open space rugs will instantly upgrade the look of your existing flooring and are one of the best options for rentals .
Options include large area rugs , runners , bedside rugs or doormats and can be made of jute cotton wool , silk , faux fur , sheep skin or synthetic materials .
Vinyl flooring is another fantastic option .
Vinyl is waterproof , soft underfoot and can be installed on your existing tiles to mimic floorboards , concrete and caustic tiles or geometric designs .
Mhm .
Other options include outdoor deck stain concrete floor , paint , epoxy resin coating , painting old ceramic tiles and simply refreshing your bathroom tiles with tile paint and regrowing .
One creative way to refresh your home is by updating your wall coverings from fabrics to wallpaper , paneling or a new coat of paint .
These simple changes can completely transform the feel of your space .

You could experiment with more daring patterns in bathrooms or cover all four walls of a room wallpaper your ceiling as well as above wall paneling or within picture frame moldings also consider using wallpaper as the focal point of the room .
Paint options are endless from a complete revamp to accent walls and decorative motives .
You can even paint over outdated power outlets , light switches and plate covers , lastly create designated focal points with striking mirrors , large floral arrangements tiling or artwork .

Window treatments will complement and enhance your existing look .
Some of our favorite options include curtains made from cotton linen or wool , lightweight gauzy shear for a bright and airy feel .

Lastly for added drama , pay extra attention to the rod placement and the curtain length , create the illusion of taller ceilings by hanging curtain rods closer to the ceiling or opting for long flowy drapes that puddle on the floor for a glamorous feel .
Something as simple as decluttering and reorganizing will instantly create a sense of calm .
Plus it doesn't cost you anything .
I personally enjoy the Mary Kondo method which encourages tidying by category beginning with clothes , then moving onto books , papers , miscellaneous items , and finally , sentimental items rather than only focusing on getting rid of clutter .
Ask yourself the important question .
Does this spark joy ?
This will help you to hone in on your values , personal design preferences and unique style .
So you can make more intentional purchasing decisions in the future .
Now that you have a clear idea of the items that spark joy both practically and aesthetically , it's time to display them in a curated way .
Implementing design principles such as the rule of three scale and layering will allow you to style existing items in new ways .
The common thread with each of these design principles is to base your vignette around items of varying size , shape , scale position and orientation trays are an excellent way to group decor minimize visual clutter and protect and enhance the appeal of any surface .
My all time favorite are a tan trays which are incredibly versatile and suit an array of design styles for an urban industrial feel opt for a leather tray with steer handles or a rustic vintage iron tray .
If you want to give your built in cabinetry window treatments and old furniture pieces of revamp simply replace the hardware swapping out a standard pool for one that reflects your design style will create a cohesive feel .
Popular materials include nickel chrome gold , vintage glass , brass or bronze in brushed burnished antique , polished lacquered or un lacquered finishes .
As mentioned in last year's video , you can enhance your bedroom bathroom and living room with timeless textures .
Some of our preferred fabrics include Belgian flax linens , damask , silk velvet leather , sheep skins , boule , chunky wool knits and simple crisp white cottons for a hotel .
Like feel some key things to consider are refreshing frayed or damaged fabrics with a new slip cover .

Engage a professional cleaner to steam clean larger sofas and upholstered items to remove marks or discoloration sourcing .

The most important tip to keep in mind is to mix different designs and scales including solid colors alongside small medium and large prints sometimes just refreshing .
The insert of your cushion makes a big difference to the overall look .
Now it's time to look at your kitchen and dining space .
Do you have a cohesive set of tableware including flatware , ceramics , glassware , and serving ware or have you accumulated a mismatch collection over the years ?
Personally , I find it really satisfying looking in my cutlery drawer and seeing matching sets , stainless steel flatware is great for everyday use because it's affordable , easy to care for and long lasting solid sterling .
Silver flatware is prized for its luxe quality and intrinsic value .
However , it does come at a premium price and requires hand washing and polishing to avoid tarnishing .
Lastly common finishes include satin , mirror burnished and dual with satin being a great everyday option as it's less prone to watermarks and fingerprints when it comes to dinnerware .
The most common materials include bone china , earthenware , porcelain , melamine and stoneware .
for everyday use .
I prefer a neutral color way such as white or ivory .
However , depending on your design style , you may opt for dinnerware with simple borders or rim detailing , handmade embellishments , bold hues or beautifully glazed dinnerware with decorative motives .
Lastly , no home update would be complete without our five Ls of styling , which formed the foundation of any interior project since we have created in-depth videos for each of our five Ls .
